Playing loud enough blues
This weblog is a repository for my creative writing.
I came up with VoodooVerse when I was fifteen or sixteen, so pardon the name.
Jay is as good a name as any, then, Jay it is.
Don’t ask to be followed, that shit is irksome.
The blue portrait of my face in the sidebar was painted by a friend.
I am American and I have lived in the South all my life.
I am primarily a poet and do not write much prose.
I write free verse with attention paid to rhyme, structure, and elements of prosody.
I believe a personal library is the most important furniture.
I believe being well-read and reading widely is a worthy pursuit for young people.
I believe expressive writing is a necessary component of personality development.
I believe our species’ talent for language is the device by which we’ve prospered most.
I believe one can do what one wants provided they are older than 30, which I am not.
I have been published in print once thus far by a publishing house I respect.
I am working on increasing that statistic.
If you choose to comment, I am open to compliments, invective, anything.
Common themes in my work include the following:
Faithfulness and faithlessness.
Sanity and insanity.
Varieties of sexuality.
Exploration of the voice.
Juxtaposition of images.
Role of animals in human reckoning.
Philosophy of drugs both licit and illicit.
Habits and problems of youth.
Single parents.
The dirt poor.
My work is to your right.
Hope I’m on the right path.
