A lobotomy in Israel

Outside it the chirrup
of a bird who knows
only the ground and what’s in it.
And odd tatters of robes
congregate wholly around
its wooded eggholding crown.
In that more birds,
themselves never to enter
the creaking mildewed rooms
of that asylum in the desert
which saw water and said water
was more than water,
was meant for hair and feet,
saw the wind under birds
forcing them up, not down,
saw the birds circling around
over that man’s head
rather than around that man’s feet
where he had dropped crumbs
from his bread, and that man said
the asylum will shut
its doors and voices out
so the loudest fool may speak about
his father’s kingdom in the clouds.

“The whole religious complexion of the modern world is due to the absence from Jerusalem of a Lunatic Asylum.” –Havelock Ellis
