Inventors of hygiene

Doctors tore gowns from their crew
of pregnant women dead of their gout
to wrap their own arms falling off.
Was not them, then, that bore
their heads into the first springwaters
on the nary else mountain,
our nursery.

Instead were women bow-legged
toting each a head inside them
who studied tame waters too.
Their hair, sheened by their morning,
when eyes unsheathe and point about
slunk emerged on the water like trash,
their newborns good swimmers
and the world early yet for wash.
