Lessons from the puberty gun

I
Learned the math of my heart
murmur long ago when I ran to
my sweetheart who rode horses.
Learned the face is valid as
the ass in the scheme of things
when the sun is a terrifying zit.
Learned how lice teach their young
so exactly, so intently, like
the factory line that kills small towns.
Learned how to load a thirty ought
and one should kiss the animal
before one shoots it dead.
Learned girls don’t love you
anymore when you cover their dresses
in twenty pounds of horseblood,
whether or not they keep their bones
or their daddies already did
