Caprices of historiography

“On the right side of history,”
says him of agile countenance
the face alight and loose,
“we stand,” how tyrants do
as their swamps swallow those
with neither vice, nor virtue.
What Napoleon invented serves
no tender man his salted earth.
“The wrong side of history”
cannot be but storied stillbirth.
