An undesired dissonance

How now fares the hermitage
adorned and decked in frill?
Only the wealthy bow to monks,
only the poor respect the wealthy:
hermits deny and pry a system
open from back-brain to front:
when poverty says to itself,
Why and whence this reverence?
it is as if the blind
covet the garbling deaf:
yet in the dark secretive
eremites pray for gold:
the common lot borrows
its miseries democratically:
the robed wish for nudity,
the naked for a robe.
