On Schopenhauer’s dictum

How odd we think civilization
was built on the backs of slaves,
the cunning of whores (ever
womankind might bare more
than breast or beatitude),
or the platitudes of sages!
It was necessity and grammar
(if they indeed are different)
that culled the rivers dry,
turned water into woodwork,
heaved mankind from muck
and delights unimaginable.
A word! An architecture
of words quite ruins biology
how no killer can:
for ideas outlast a cell
and literature the man.
