On the offspring race

Why not ignore the ward?
Each child is a bundle
of stomach and sinew—
the young waste themselves
in misery and news
only violence can fulfill—
when kindness removes
from every sorted face,
pinched as the newly dead—
for wars of all against all
begin in the crib,
where children contemplate
another’s sooner end.
