Against the cities

How the good come despairing
to the desert where ecstatic
hermits seize in solitude!
Their bones (paint me white
but the lonely dissociate
and judge as well as anyone)
line the walk—hither ages
coalesce for the historians—
we all must count the sects:
one disciple scrawls an awful
verse against the cities—
