The train from state to state

It is a custom among the people
of an island ten thousand miles
from here to behead their parents
once they are fifty. What
of Orwell’s admonition, of our
faces fifty short years hence?
The face too wears us out.
We wear it—we cannot bleach it,
we can deceive with it
no longer, we cannot sell it—
hoary habitude! This showing
of pinched skin and cartilage
what we think well behind it,
this misexpression in our islands!
