A cruel ecology of the sheltered

The value of the local village
lies in its origin. Hundreds
of similar villages, similar peoples
pepper this manufactured landscape.
A man in a suit—he neglected
his son every day of his life—
paid a penny for every person
who sweated for these houses,
medieval in their advent
but modern in design—
it is said the wonders
of antiquity were too built
over the bodies of their makers—
thirty or so Amalekites
dead in every door hinge,
their ancestors in the lath—
