Voltaire’s squeeze

To quantify happiness, says the mistress
in France—now corpses both—in her
treatise no one but despised boys read,

rather than read it. How narratives
invoke, destroy, breed, melt apart,

men do, and women do, and children do,
and such an algebra shifts into
a paragraph, a poem, an obituary.
