Someone gave birth on the street

A hermit goes public:
bright noon in Market Square
and the stench of people—
writers of articles no one reads,
scroungers, poor them,
and their simulacra—
two tiny dogs and a man
by any standard ugly,
and his mottled woman:
God saved me, God saved me!
She begs for change
from an awkward atheist
in a Southern city—
I say, God save you,
and walk disgruntled
on my way—
