A sham free will

A book preserves the bullet—
Rome is better in a page
than Rome fallen in one day—
how to build a circumspection
that rotates with an eye—
we, all of us, die—relax—
how to rectify the past
is an esoteric subject
best left alone—engravings
in the gravestones signify
the muse: now, now, now,
before the mind is used—
how central is the poet,
how peripheral the view—
