In the Thebaid

In the Thebaid several men
draw water from the ground
and flagellate themselves—
white skin and rigid muscles
lead to a cleft where blood
collects and sins do not—
a pervert among them
prays thrice daily:
hither go the men
when they sense an urge:
to the secret cell
where alcohol flows
and eyes set awry:
morbid company, them—
a few black flecks
on the dunes God
erected, lazy him—
