On great literature
To open a book, a booming tome
and contract a case of vertigo—
that is the demon in the canon.
Wherefore a counterculturist
denies his birthright foretold:
read the greats! And not the men
who aspire alongside you impotently.
For even a long-dead author
is much abused by better men than him—
they are institutions for a reason,
as they reasoned: all the dooms
of written seasons fashion in a clutch
time itself dissolves in decades:
what was decadent is now a norm
and what was scripture is now deformed.
