The referential word

Or: Favors from the imaginary

Why not despise an institution?
I was anatomy before an artist—
how fraudulent Picasso sold
his models their demise—
Wilde smoked what I smoke
and was hanged and sodomized—
Hawthorne drank a pint
and slipped it to his cousin—
Job was loathed and hated—
Poe and Nietzsche auto-asphyxiated—
why not then—narratives head
to aggrandizing conclusions—
we all must think and read
of masters and their musings—
and ask—what matters much
but a symbol and its offspring?
If they too were men, like us,
they too refused extension—
how sham a thought that begs
excess or multiple inclusions—
we should work, and work,
how our stories did before us—
