To Eliot, snide antiquity

We sense the novel isn’t new—
we sense the dead in review—
their books provoked our illness—
our poor people will outdo.

The wasteland is a pasture
and human is a metaphor—
contempt is the condition—
monkhood the what-for:

to be alone and devise—
the symbol always passes—
what antiquity advises
is lone posterity alive!
