On the value of any sound at all

We must make something of this,
the collective groan of mankind—
at first falsetto, a lover’s moan,
then the rattle and the stroke—
tarry long in the music! Some
day we will even wish for sounds
from a gas chamber or the ward—
for no silence outperforms
a voice at times enthralled
in pleasure or aghast—
we would rather lend our ears
to a beehive than a blade
Van Gogh might have carried—
