Dead in Orleans

How exhausted a good man is—
philosophy runs amok
as the ecstatic murdered
in pink and yellow garments
(cinaedii fill the streets)
arise puckered and plucked,
charred black on a windowsill
of a little Orleans church—
four little Birmingham girls—
six or so men grilled up in gasoline—
where a temple ministers
so does a flagrant bigot burn—
every proud-mouthed queer
is an arbiter of history,
they say, in repetition—
