The egotism of interiors

A gaggle of depressives
mope in a room lit dim
in the depths of Knoxville,
they think—though no
such misery is theirs
to own, or confound—
we might as well read
what the 18th century said:
happiness is hedonism,
is for the libertine alone—
the lie goes—the bones
of the dead tell otherwise,
scattered and ever distant
from each the other’s old saw:
company loves more company!
