Between grammar and gallows

What have I done to myself.
The last time I wept, in good health,
for literature was years ago:
I harbored briefly that glow
which conspires between grammar
and gallows, anvil and hammer:
I am gall, indeed, and shallow
for stoking too often those
neurons I should never have learned of.
